    Unplug and get out

My interest in television programming has slumped considerably in the last 3 weeks with the onset of warm weather.  But every now and then I do like to sit down and watch some shows.  But the more I watch the more I hate TV.  There are all these adds for these wonderful looking programs, they show clip after clip and make it seem really interesting.  And then you tune into the show and it's nothing that it's cracked up to be.  All the clips in the pre-views, well that was the show... there was nothing new added.  BORING!!

And then you get these reality shows, which I hate, and for good reason.  You start to watch and then they go to commercial, but before they go they give you a pre-view of what is to come after the break.  The break is up and they review what happened in all the time that you had watched until the break and then they show you what was in the preview before the break.  Before you know it it's another commercial and they haven’t showed you a single new frame of the show.  What the heck is up with that?? Are people really out of ideas for TV.

Maybe we should spend more time tuning out of the TV and using our real imaginations.  Read a book, find your artistic side.  Some parents need to spend more time with their kids and play with them.  Lets put our minds and bodies to good use.  It's now spring in Winnipeg and we all know that the warm weather is never long enough.  Go outside, play with your kids, fancy up the yard, or just pick up the garbage that the wind is swirling around your yard.  Take a walk.... hey maybe you might meet a neighbor, isn't that a concept?

So here is your challenge, unplug the tv, dvd, video game and check this out: www.movingaroundmanitoba.ca Register and take the challenge!

    Old Wives Tales

After spending sometime with my dear parents in the last few days I’ve come to realize more and more that they are definitely from a different era from where I am living today.  My parents definitely live in the ways of way back when.  This is because they are from way back when.  My parents are in their 60’s and 70’s and think nothing like we do today.  Especially when it comes to the way we live.  They are the ones that live by the old wives tales told to them by their parents and older people around them.  Some of the things that come out of their mouth I do agree with….but most, I have to say I lean to the far opposing side.  Take these thoughts of how my parents think:

If a woman’s carrying low, it’s a boy; if a woman’s carrying high, it’s a girl. – now really, does this make any sense?  Most of this has to do with a woman’s body of how good of shape it’s in, how strong their muscles are and how many kids this lady has had.  After 12th pregnancy I think that MOST women would be carrying low, no??  Hey, almost any way you look at it it’s a 50/50 chance that it’s a girl or a boy.

Cats can steal the air from a baby's mouth. – Ya, I’ve heard this one more than once.  But so not true!  How can a cat steal air from the baby’s mouth?  I have two cats who like to snuggle next to me and lay near my face.  Never have I felt short of air from the cat breathing on me!  But… cats will snuggle up and sometimes lay on my face, head or any other body part, so a cat can smother and suffocate a baby only because they can’t push the cat off them like we can.  So steal the air, do they mean suffocate by smothering??

Coffee stunts your growth.- I can’t tell you how many times I have heard this one!!  From all the “Kinder Kaffe” I drank as I kid I should have only been 3 feet tall!  If you are wondering what “Kinder Kaffe” is, it was the kind of coffee that my aunt had made for me when I was little kid.  It was coffee with lots of milk and sugar.  As the adults were having coffee so would I.  Wow…believe it or not I did grow past 5 feet and I am the TALLER one of my family.  I only wish it would have stunted my growth.. the horizontal way!

Spicy foods can cause ulcers. – My mother definitely believes in this.  But no.. it may burn the taste buds and you may have a burning ring of fire when it’s on the exit, but I’m sure that the hydrochloric acid that is in the stomach is much more corrosive than the spice in the food.  So eat all the spice you want.

If you go outside with wet hair, you'll catch a cold. – If my parents live by any old wives tale it’s definitely this one!  They believe that if you go outside in winter and not cover your head that you will catch a cold. Out of all the crazy things that my folks believe this is the one that drives me the most crazy.  Just the other day my Dad said to me that catching a chill you will catch a cold and bark like a dog for weeks.  No, a VIRUS cases colds!!!!  Ugh!!! How come they don’t get that???  That one drives me nuts!

Reading in dim light will damage your eyes & Too much TV is bad for your eyes. – This is another famous one that I have heard all my life.  Guess what.. it’s WRONG!   Dim light might be hard to read a book in… and if you stare at the TV too long your eyes might get tired because you forget to blink.  But it’s all crap.

If you cross your eyes, they'll stay that way. – If this were true do you have any ideas how many people would be walking around with crossed eyes?  Half the population would be walking around with crosses eyes and funny looking faces.  Parents just live to tell their little children this to scare them only because parents hate looking at crossed eyes.

Cracking knuckles causes arthritis – Ya, the good old knuckle crack, again this is wrong wrong wrong! Arthritis is caused by other problems in your joints.  The only thing that can result of cracking your knuckles is that you may irritate your joints and they could swell.  This is what some folks may think as being “arthritis”, but it’s all a big joke.

The one that I hate hearing from my mother is Sitting on cold concrete or the cold ground will cause hemorrhoids and piles.  Ok, how about you go around and ask a little kid what a hemorrhoid or pile is?  Do you think they will know??  And of course a parent will try to describe it and will probably use some disgusting descriptors.  What I see this one to be is just a way for parents to put the fear into their kids so that mother’s won’t have to wash dirty pants with grass stains!  Yup, just a scare.  Thanks Mom!
